The world’s largest pharmacy chain has announced the removal of a number of items related to its popular antibiotic, Cipro, from the pharmacy shelves in Thailand.
Cipro’s manufacturer, Allergan, has been voluntarily recalling certain items from the pharmacies in Thailand after an investigation was triggered by a large number of adverse events.
In the letter dated March 27, Allergan letter to the Health Ministry said: “These items have been found to be tainted with Cipro and related antibiotics. These products were marketed as being for treating infections caused by bacteria and parasites, while they were being sold as being for preventing bacterial infections, including skin infections and urinary tract infections.”
Allergan spokesperson Rupa Patten said in a statement: “The product has been reported to be tainted with the active ingredients Ciprofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride, Ciprofloxacin Sodium, Ciprofloxacin Hydrobromide, Ciprofloxacin Sulphate and Ciprofloxacin Sulphate Hydrochloride.”
Allergan’s letter states that it “has conducted extensive, ongoing and comprehensive studies and testing of the active ingredients contained in these products. These studies were conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of the products in addressing the bacterial infection and provide further information and recommendations on how to mitigate the risk of experiencing adverse events associated with the use of these products.”
In March, Allergan reported that the products contained the following ingredients:
Ciprofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride and Ciprofloxacin Hydrobromide are antibiotics that are commonly used to treat bacterial infections such as bacterial vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, bacterial prostatitis, and skin infections.
The products have been labelled in capsule shape with the words “A” and “B” on them and with “B” on the label. These capsules were found to be contaminated with the above ingredients and were therefore removed from the pharmacy shelves.
